Coinbase and Marqeta are broadening their collaboration on stablecoin-backed payment cards, enabling businesses to build programs that let customers spend digital dollars through conventional card networks.
The partnership pairs Marqeta’s card issuing technology and access to established payment infrastructure with Coinbase’s cryptocurrency custody, stablecoin conversion, and settlement services. The arrangement abstracts blockchain complexity from end users, allowing them to transact with digital dollars without understanding which underlying blockchain handles the transfer.
The technology operates as a backend layer. Merchants continue to accept ordinary card payments through familiar networks, while stablecoin balances are converted and settled between Coinbase and Marqeta behind the scenes. This model preserves existing card-network fees and regulatory requirements, which remain in place regardless of the blockchain component.
The announcement describes infrastructure available for other businesses to license and build upon, rather than a finished consumer payment card. Coinbase and Marqeta are positioning the framework as a toolkit for third parties to develop their own stablecoin payment programs.
The expansion reflects growing interest in bridging digital asset infrastructure with legacy payment rails. By removing the requirement that merchants understand or accept cryptocurrency directly, the approach widens potential use cases for stablecoins in everyday commerce.
Coinbase operates Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 network that could support settlement for such transactions, though the announcement does not specify which stablecoin or blockchain will be used in live deployments, nor does it name any businesses currently adopting the technology.
