Third consecutive session of consolidation signals need for fresh directional catalyst

Bitcoin is trading between $64,000 and $66,800 for the third consecutive session after rallying more than 13% from its July 1 low of $57,750, according to CoinDesk. The price stood at $65,674 as of July 23 at 10:26 a.m. UTC, down 0.62% since midnight.

Tuesday’s failure to break convincingly above $66,000 underscores a market awaiting fresh momentum. Traditional markets offered little directional help, with Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 futures declining 0.3% overnight. Gold and silver rallied Wednesday, but failed to pull Bitcoin higher with conviction.

Crypto futures show balanced positioning

The crypto futures market reported 24-hour trading volume at $147 billion, down 1%, with open interest at $111 billion. Bitcoin futures open interest declined from 760K BTC earlier in the week to 743K BTC, signaling long liquidations rather than fresh short entries.

The long-short ratio remained nearly balanced, indicating traders lack aggressive directional conviction. Ethereum’s open interest ticked up during the overnight price drop, while several altcoins including ZEC, HBAR, LTC, AVAX, and SUI showed positive cumulative volume deltas, pointing to taker-buy pressure.

Volatility and options demand

Bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility index increased for the fifth straight day. Historically negatively correlated with spot price since the spot ETF launch, the rise suggests traders are hedging downside risk even as prices stabilize.

Deribit and Paradigm, the options exchange and OTC desk respectively, saw notable demand for BTC $70,000 call options expiring August 7. Put-call skews for both Bitcoin and Ethereum are slipping toward zero, indicating evaporating market fear. Ethereum’s one-week skew briefly turned negative, marking a temporary bullish shift where calls became more expensive than puts.

Altcoin sentiment mixed

The CoinMarketCap altcoin season indicator stood at 51/100. Several tokens moved against broader consolidation: WLFI, a Donald Trump family-linked token, surged 12.18%, while Morpho, described as an AI outperformer, gained 4%. Ethena (ENA) rose 2%, outperforming most DeFi peers despite trading 90% below its September 2025 peak. Lighter declined 2.96% for the third straight session after a 200% rally between May and early July, as traders took profits.

With Bitcoin consolidating and traditional markets offering no clear directional signal, traders are positioned for a breakout but awaiting the catalyst to trigger it.
