South Korea’s largest trading company tests blockchain settlement for global payments

POSCO International, South Korea’s largest trading company, has begun tokenizing live trade receivables on the Injective blockchain to accelerate payment settlement between its global subsidiaries, according to CoinDesk reporting published on July 27, 2026.

The pilot uses receivables from real trade between POSCO’s overseas operations and counterparties, not simulated transactions. A POSCO International spokesperson stated: “This PoC is significant in that it validated the applicability of AI and blockchain technology based on real trade data and processes.”

Trade receivables represent money owed to a company after goods have been shipped but before payment is received. Traditionally, buyers, sellers, and banks track receivables separately, with reconciliation taking days before cash release. Placing receivables on a shared blockchain ledger creates a single transferable record that embeds compliance rules, eliminating manual reconciliation steps.

LG CNS, the technology arm of LG Group, is the implementation partner. LG CNS previously worked on Bank of Korea’s central bank digital currency pilot and operates tokenization platforms for KOSCOM and Mirae Asset Securities.

POSCO International reported $22.2 billion in revenue last year from steel, energy, and battery materials businesses. The company plans to complete the pilot and move to live production later this year.

Broader tokenization momentum

The pilot reflects wider corporate adoption of blockchain in trade finance. Hyundai recently began using stablecoins for internal treasury transfers between U.S. and Mexico operations. Circle, a stablecoin issuer, partnered with Kakao Group and Toss Bank to explore stablecoin payment infrastructure in South Korea.

The tokenized assets market currently stands at $35 billion, according to available estimates. Citi projects the market could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, encompassing corporate debt, equities, and commodities on distributed ledgers.
