Cardano’s Van Rossem hard fork has completed testing on the PreProd testnet and is now advancing through governance and validation phases ahead of mainnet activation.

The upgrade is part of Cardano’s post-Voltaire era, where governance bodies, stake pool operators, exchanges, and ecosystem groups coordinate protocol changes. The PreProd testnet enactment serves as a rehearsal of the upgrade path before the larger mainnet milestone, which will require exchange and infrastructure provider readiness.

Intersect, the Cardano ecosystem organization, is central to coordinating the protocol change across the network. Governance has become a defining feature of Cardano’s identity, with the Van Rossem upgrade demonstrating how the network intends to execute future protocol changes through collaborative decision-making rather than unilateral developer control.

The completion of PreProd testing removes a key technical hurdle. Developers and ecosystem participants now have validation that the upgrade path functions as intended in a controlled environment. That validation reduces uncertainty for exchanges, wallet providers, and node operators preparing their infrastructure for mainnet activation.

Mainnet activation remains the critical juncture. Unlike testnet enactment, mainnet activation carries real economic stakes. ADA traders and network participants will be watching whether Cardano can execute the protocol change without disruption, as the success or failure of Van Rossem will shape confidence in Cardano’s ability to deliver future upgrades under its post-Voltaire governance model.

The upgrade does not yet have a publicly confirmed mainnet activation date. Cardano has signaled that readiness checks across the ecosystem, including exchange integration and infrastructure testing, will determine the timing of the final transition.
