Optimism is consolidating operational control over three Ethereum layer-2 chains, with Unichain’s planned October 29 mainnet migration marking the latest addition to its managed infrastructure portfolio.
The expansion follows Unichain’s shift to Optimism’s Fully Managed tier, where OP Labs will operate sequencing, node access, monitoring and incident response. Unichain’s testnet migration is scheduled for October 13, with mainnet to follow on October 29. The chain will preserve its existing contract-upgrade governance, chain ID, and Uniswap v2, v3 and v4 deployments during the transition, according to Uniswap Labs.
Unichain is not the first production chain under Optimism’s control. Soneium announced adoption of the Fully Managed service on September 30, targeting 99.9% monthly uptime. Ink, another OP Stack chain, began its cutover to Optimism’s infrastructure in June, with Optimism strategist Jing Wang stating at the time that the arrangement would allow “product teams build their applications and ecosystems while Optimism runs the infrastructure beneath them.”
Service tiers and incident response
OP Enterprise offers two operational models. Self Managed requires the chain operator to run infrastructure while Optimism provides support. Fully Managed delegates sequencing, batching, proposal and chain infrastructure to OP Labs.
Unichain already held an OP Enterprise relationship with a Mission Critical add-on before the October 9 expansion announcement. The Mission Critical tier targets 99.95% uptime and commits to a 15-minute initial response window for the most serious incidents, with status updates every 30 minutes. Forced transaction inclusion through Ethereum provides a fallback mechanism when the sequencer becomes unavailable, though it carries up to a 12-hour delay.
Settlement and proof timelines
Unichain, Ink and Soneium all operate under a seven-day proof-maturity period before state roots finalize. Unichain and Ink each carry a 3.5-day root settlement window followed by a 3.5-day post-settlement period. Optimism targets 200 milliseconds for network speed across its infrastructure.
Unichain and Ink are classified as Stage 1 rollups by L2BEAT, meaning they have permissionless fault proofs as a fallback mechanism. Soneium operates under a whitelisted-proposer model without a functional onchain dispute process; if proposers fail, withdrawals freeze. Uniswap Labs has stated that native interoperability for Unichain remains a future feature.
Operational consolidation
The three-chain arrangement concentrates sequencing and maintenance under a single organization for the first time at this scale. Soneium’s September adoption follows the same operational division as Ink’s June plan. Both Ink and Soneium use the OP Stack framework.
Optimism Foundation published a guide on September 7 describing Ink’s infrastructure as operated by the Foundation through OP Labs. The OP Enterprise version was updated on July 31 to support the expanded service model.
