Network dominance amid illicit activity oversight
TRON has surpassed $30 trillion in lifetime transaction volume while hosting $94 billion in USDT circulation, marking the blockchain’s emergence as the dominant stablecoin settlement layer even as financial crime oversight intensifies across the network.
The network processes approximately $25 billion in USDT transfers daily, averaging $6 trillion annually as of 2026. Since launch, TRON has recorded over 15 billion transactions across 405 million accounts. Payment-card activity on TRON is expanding beyond crypto-to-crypto transfers into regulated finance, with the network accounting for 34 percent of crypto payment-card volume in Q2 2026, up from 33 percent in Q1, as overall card volume increased to $2.4 billion in Q2 from $2 billion in Q1.
The scale of USDT settlement on TRON has attracted institutional capital. Regulated financial products now launching on the network include a staked TRX exchange-traded fund from Canary Capital, TRX staking and TRC-20 custody offerings from Anchorage Digital, and a tokenized Hamilton Lane fund via Securitize. These products signal confidence from traditional asset managers and custodians in TRON’s infrastructure.
Illicit flows and enforcement response
TRON’s low transaction costs and access to widely used stablecoins have made it a preferred settlement layer for illicit activity. TRM Labs identified TRON as handling more than 58 percent of illicit crypto flows it tracked in 2024, with the firm identifying $26 billion of $45 billion total illicit crypto volume on TRON that year.
In response, the T3 Financial Crime Unit, established in 2024 by TRON, Tether, and TRM Labs, has expanded enforcement coordination. By May 2026, T3 had frozen over $450 million in illicit assets and supports law enforcement across 23 jurisdictions on cases involving exchange hacks, North Korea-linked activity, terrorist financing, drugs, and violent crimes. The unit can freeze USDT within 24 hours of law-enforcement request.
Regulatory resolution
A March 2026 settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission resolved a 2023 lawsuit against TRON founder Justin Sun, the Tron Foundation, and related entities. The SEC dismissed wash-trading claims against Rainberry and all remaining claims against Sun, the Tron Foundation, and the BitTorrent Foundation.
