Sui Network came back online Thursday after a 5 hour and 55 minute outage caused by a bug in the gas charging logic introduced by the 1.72 release, marking the layer-1 blockchain’s second period of downtime in 2026.

The mainnet went offline early Thursday morning. Sui posted to X that validators were “experiencing a network stall” before later confirming “a halt due to a crash bug in the gas charging logic introduced by the 1.72 release. A full incident review will be shared in the coming days.”

The outage sent SUI token price down 6.6% to a low of 90 cents during the disruption. By early Friday, the token had recovered to 93 cents. The price decline reverses gains made earlier in May, when SUI climbed 50% to $1.41 following several positive developments, including a Nasdaq-listed company staking a large portion of the supply.

Sui mainnet validators are still listed as having degraded performance following the outage. This is the second outage of the Sui blockchain in 2026. A similar incident occurred in January 2026 lasting more than six hours. Another incident occurred in November 2024 when all validators were stuck in a crash loop for around two and a half hours.

Network Status and Ecosystem Impact

Sui hosts 137 protocols and holds $542 million in total value locked, ranking 13th by that metric according to DefiLlama data. The repeated downtime episodes raise questions about network stability as Mysten Labs, the developer of Sui, continues to build out infrastructure.

Sui launched its mainnet in May 2023 with the goal of becoming a scalable blockchain capable of processing transactions fast enough for financial institutions. At Consensus 2026, co-founder Adenyi Abiodun of Mysten Labs announced plans for zero-fee stablecoin transfers and private-transaction features, developments that had helped drive the token’s earlier rally before Thursday’s outage.

The full incident review from Mysten Labs is pending. Until that review is published, details on the specific nature of the gas charging bug remain limited. Validators continue to report degraded performance as the network stabilizes.
