IG Europe has partnered with Austrian exchange Bitpanda to expand spot crypto trading across European markets, leveraging Bitpanda’s infrastructure for liquidity and market data. The partnership, announced May 21, 2026, follows IG Group’s UK crypto launch in 2025 and represents the London-listed FTSE 100 company’s strategy to scale digital asset services under MiCA compliance. IG Group, which serves 1.3 million clients globally, generated £331.2 million in Q1 revenue, with spot crypto currently representing less than 1% of that total.

Regulated Expansion Under MiCA Framework

IG Europe operates under BaFin, Germany’s financial regulator, and holds a MiCA license obtained in 2025. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation sets strict capital, governance, and custody requirements across the EU, making partnerships faster than building independent infrastructure. By integrating with Bitpanda, IG Europe avoids the operational burden of constructing its own trading systems while maintaining regulatory compliance. Esteve Jane, Managing Director of IG Europe, stated the partnership “broadens our product offering across Europe, giving experienced investors access to a wider range of asset classes with the quality and security they demand.”

Bitpanda’s Role in IG’s Global Crypto Strategy

Bitpanda will supply liquidity, trading connectivity, and market data to power IG Europe’s spot crypto operations. The Austrian exchange has positioned itself as infrastructure provider for regulated platforms across the EU. IG Group’s crypto expansion follows a pattern: it launched spot trading in the UK in 2025, expanded to Australia in March 2026 via its acquisition of Independent Reserve, and previously divested futures platform Small Exchange to Kraken in October. The Bitpanda partnership signals IG’s commitment to regulated, infrastructure-light expansion rather than organic platform development.

Market Response and Unresolved Timelines

IG Group’s share price increased 2.7% on the announcement day, reflecting investor confidence in the European expansion strategy. However, no specific launch date for European markets has been confirmed, nor have the company disclosed which EU countries will be included or which crypto assets will be offered initially. Bitpanda is simultaneously expanding into Vision Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 for tokenized assets, and traditional equities and ETFs, suggesting a multi-asset ecosystem approach. IG’s European rollout timing remains contingent on regulatory approvals and operational readiness across target jurisdictions.
