Grayscale withdrew its Cardano Trust ETF registration on Aug. 7, 2026, two days before ADA reached the six-month CME futures trading history required under the SEC’s generic listing framework for spot-commodity ETF eligibility.
The withdrawal left Cardano without its only dedicated U.S. spot ETF filing even as the new futures history could have eased approval pathways for future applicants. Grayscale told the SEC it “does not intend to proceed with the planned distribution.”
The timing raised questions about Grayscale’s calculus. A new spot ADA ETF application filed after Aug. 9 would inherit a faster review window under the SEC’s generic listing standards, removing the bespoke Section 19(b) proposed rule change track and its 240-day maximum review period. Instead, qualifying applications could proceed under the streamlined framework for commodity-based trust shares.
Grayscale’s decision was not isolated to Cardano. The company withdrew registrations for Hedera (HBAR) and Polkadot (DOT) filings within three minutes on Aug. 7, suggesting a portfolio-level product decision rather than an asset-specific issue. Other Grayscale altcoin registrations including Bittensor, Aave, BNB, NEAR, and Zcash remained active and preliminary the next day.
The Cardano Trust ETF registration never became effective; no securities were issued or sold under it. Grayscale’s broader crypto exposure to Cardano had already narrowed. The company’s CoinDesk Crypto 5 ETF dropped ADA in its January rebalance, replacing it with BNB.
Existing Cardano ETF Products
Volatility Shares operates a Cardano ETF built primarily on CME ADA futures, with combined net assets of $1.26 million across standard and leveraged versions as of July. The prospectus states the fund does not invest directly in ADA.
Franklin Templeton’s Crypto Index ETF still holds ADA at 0.69% of net assets, representing $70,709 in dollar value as of year-end last year.
Market Context
ADA has fallen more than 41% year-to-date and roughly 70% since Grayscale’s original ETF filing. The asset’s market cap stands at $7.1 billion. A $25 million dedicated spot ADA ETF would represent 0.35% of market cap; a $500 million fund would represent 7%.
No other dedicated U.S. spot ADA filing appears active after Aug. 9, according to CryptoSlate reporting by Gino Matos.
