Former members of the Ethereum Foundation’s Institutional Privacy Task Force have launched EthSystems, a for-profit startup commercializing privacy infrastructure work previously developed inside the foundation for use by banks and financial institutions.
The spinout emerged after the Ethereum Foundation spent the past year developing privacy technologies for enterprise use cases while engaging with central banks, regulators, global banks and asset managers. Joseph Lubin, Ethereum co-founder, is among the investors backing EthSystems, alongside BitMine, SharpLink, and SNZ.
What EthSystems Plans to Commercialize
EthSystems plans to commercialize work including confidential stablecoin transfers, private bond issuance, cross-chain settlement systems and open-source protocol specifications. The startup argues confidentiality is a key barrier preventing banks and asset managers from moving real-world financial flows onto Ethereum.
“Commercial engagements need a commercial counterparty,” EthSystems stated in its announcement. “The model is simple: we continue the work we’ve been doing, only now we charge for it.”
Why Banks Want Privacy on Public Ledgers
Many financial institutions remain reluctant to transact on fully transparent public ledgers, creating demand for privacy-preserving infrastructure. EthSystems positions itself to address that gap by offering institutions the privacy controls necessary to settle transactions on Ethereum-based systems.
Ethereum Foundation Restructuring and Spinouts
The launch comes amid one of the biggest organizational shakeups in the Ethereum Foundation in years following months of criticism over leadership, strategy, and the foundation’s role in supporting Ethereum’s increasingly institutional user base.
EthSystems joins other Ethereum Foundation spinouts including EthLabs and Ethereum Institutional, both nonprofit entities. The emergence of EthSystems as a for-profit entity reflects the foundation’s shift toward supporting institutional adoption through specialized commercial vehicles.
