Ethereum saw its largest single-day exchange withdrawal in over four months on October 23, with 169,770 ETH moving off centralized platforms, according to Santiment, a crypto market intelligence platform. At Santiment’s reference price of $2,400, the withdrawal represented approximately $407 million in value.
The outflow coincided with sustained pressure on US spot Ethereum ETFs. Through October 22, the funds recorded net outflows exceeding $1 billion since October 1, with 14 of 16 tracked sessions recording negative flows, according to Farside Investors, an investment management company monitoring ETF flows. On October 22 alone, ETFs posted a $111 million outflow as the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% to 26,009 on concerns about artificial intelligence spending. Treasury yields fell sharply the same day as investors sought safety.
The October 23 withdrawal marked the largest daily exit since June 5, 2024, when 223,800 ETH left exchanges. The June withdrawal was approximately 32% larger than the October figure. Santiment tracks coins moving between monitored exchange addresses and other destinations but does not identify the owners or motives behind the transfers. Coins leaving exchanges typically move to self-custody, staking, or institutional custody arrangements.
ETF inflows have been sporadic during the period. The funds recorded $25 million in inflows on October 13 and $15 million on October 21, providing temporary relief before the sustained outflow pattern resumed. On October 23, preliminary data showed a $4 million inflow, though Farside did not specify which of the 16 tracked funds’ October 23 figure was unavailable.
Price Levels and Technical Positioning
Ethereum’s technical rebound case depends on holding key support levels. A move to $2,500 would represent a 4.2% gain from Santiment’s $2,400 reference price and would strengthen the rebound narrative. A drop to $2,330 would represent a 2.9% decline and would weaken it.
Altcoin breadth showed mixed signals over different timeframes. According to Alpha Finance, an altcoin breadth tracker, 60% of major altcoins outperformed Bitcoin over the past 90 days, while 27% outperformed over the past seven days. Alpha Finance’s altcoin season threshold is 75% or more of major altcoins outperforming Bitcoin over 90 days, meaning the market remains below that threshold despite longer-term strength.
Whale Positioning and Market Context
Trader 0xsweep posted on October 17 that he was “building ETH longs like there’s no tomorrow,” signaling confidence in Ethereum despite the broader ETF outflow environment. The Federal Reserve set its target rate range at 3.75% to 4% in September and is scheduled to meet October 27 and 28, with market participants monitoring whether rate cuts will continue.
