Ethereum is considering a change that would let compounding validators set custom thresholds for when excess staking rewards enter the network’s automatic withdrawal sweep, according to draft EIP-8148.
The proposal would allow 0x02 validators to encode an initial threshold between 32 ETH and 2,048 ETH at deposit creation time. Currently, 0x02 validators default to a 2,048 ETH threshold before automatic sweep triggers. Legacy 0x01 validators operate under a 32 ETH cap, with any balance above that amount periodically swept to the withdrawal address and unable to compound.
EIP-8148 was marked Draft status on August 25. The proposal includes a related consensus-spec change that merged on August 24. According to the specification, once a valid custom threshold is in place, future rewards above it become eligible for automatic sweep, though principal withdrawals continue to use existing partial-withdrawal or full-exit paths. A post-creation request must set the threshold at or above the validator’s current balance; if a creating deposit encodes a threshold below the amount deposited, the protocol ignores it.
Current 0x02 Adoption
As of July 28, 16,926 active 0x02 validators were operating on the network, representing 1.91% of all active validators. Those validators hold 13.36 million ETH, or 32.43% of the total active stake.
Lido, the largest staking service, uses pooled accounting where stETH holder balances are updated through oracle-driven rebases. Coinbase Prime says rewards on its Pectra-enabled 0x02 validators compound and can be claimed through the existing partial-withdrawal process.
Withdrawal and Sweep Timeline
On August 25, the exit queue held 160 ETH with an estimated 4-minute wait time. The network-wide automatic sweep cycle is estimated at 7.8 days.
EIP-8148 remains in Draft status. Forkcast listed it as proposed for the Hegotá fork, though fork placement, activation timing, and final implementation details remain pending. The proposal does not specify when it might be activated or which Ethereum fork will ultimately include it.
