DogeOS launched a public testnet on Wednesday that allows developers to build Ethereum-compatible decentralized finance applications using test DOGE tokens. The network enables trading, lending, and stablecoin applications on infrastructure separate from Dogecoin’s base layer.
Jordan Jefferson, DogeOS founder and architect of the MyDoge wallet, said the launch marks the first time developers can deploy applications on Dogecoin at scale. “No other digital asset has Dogecoin’s combination of liquidity, community and cultural reach, and its potential has barely been tapped. With DogeOS, developers can finally build applications on Dogecoin, and with MyDoge, they will be able to put those apps in front of users from day one,” Jefferson said.
The testnet operates with a permissioned sequencer, validators, and a Security Council rather than Dogecoin miners. DogeOS plans to eventually tie security to Dogecoin’s mining network through a proposed upgrade called OP_CHECKZKP, which would use mathematical proofs to verify transactions. The upgrade was published as a proposal in July 2025 and submitted as a draft implementation in December 2025, but no activation date has been announced.
Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, endorsed DogeOS as a path to add applications without modifying Dogecoin itself. “The community has been saying ‘Doge to $1’ for years. A real economy built on Dogecoin is how we get there, and beyond,” Jefferson said, describing the rationale for building a broader ecosystem around the $13 billion cryptocurrency.
Earlier Memecoin Networks and ETF Weakness
DogeOS enters a landscape where prior attempts to add applications to memecoins have struggled. Dogechain launched in 2022 and saw $4.6 million in deposits to financial applications within days, but that value collapsed to $300 by the time DeFiLlama tracked it. Shibarium, the Shiba Inu application network launched in 2023, peaked at $6.4 million in financial application value before dropping to $140,000.
Institutional interest in Dogecoin itself has been tepid. Three U.S. Dogecoin ETFs collected $12 million in net inflows over nearly 10 months, with 166 of 199 trading days showing no net flows. Bitwise, a cryptocurrency fund manager, announced closure of its Dogecoin ETF after it held only $700,000 at the time of the closure announcement.
The Dogecoin Foundation previously disowned Dogechain, signaling community skepticism toward external applications built on memecoin infrastructure. DogeOS differentiates itself by proposing to anchor security to Dogecoin’s native mining network through OP_CHECKZKP, though that upgrade remains in draft stage with no confirmed timeline for activation on Dogecoin.
Testnet Architecture and Next Steps
The testnet allows developers to experiment with DeFi primitives without risking real assets. Users interact through MyDoge, which integrates with DogeOS applications from launch. No mainnet deployment date has been announced.
