Chen doubts US government will buy BTC within two years
Gracy Chen, CEO of crypto exchange Bitget, forecasts Bitcoin will trade within $10,000 to $20,000 of its current price through year-end, while dismissing the likelihood of US government purchases within the next two years, according to an interview published by Cointelegraph on August 21, 2026.
Chen cited interest rates and macroeconomic conditions as the primary drivers shaping Bitcoin’s near-term trajectory. “My guess is maybe around the same range,” Chen said when discussing year-end price expectations. She noted difficulty in predicting whether Bitcoin would finish above or below the $70,000 level.
On the question of expanded US government Bitcoin acquisition, Chen expressed skepticism about near-term purchases despite the Trump administration’s crypto-friendly posture. “From a policy perspective, it’s probably unlikely. I just don’t see it coming right now,” Chen stated. She emphasized that active Bitcoin purchases would require debate among lawmakers and political parties, a political hurdle she does not expect to clear soon.
The Trump administration established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve in March 2025 using Bitcoin already forfeited to the federal government. The administration has directed officials to explore budget-neutral strategies for acquiring additional BTC. US government holdings currently stand at 328,372 BTC according to BitcoinTreasuries.NET, accumulated primarily through law enforcement seizures and asset forfeitures rather than direct market purchases.
Chen’s forecast reflects broader recognition that Bitcoin has become increasingly integrated with traditional finance and more sensitive to macroeconomic shifts. She cautioned that certain policy or economic developments could pressure prices downward. “If any of that happens, the price should go down, at least theoretically,” Chen said.
