Bitcoin consolidated near $83,000 on September 30 as the 30-year Treasury yield topped 5.6% for the first time since June 2002, while Robinhood’s announcement of U.S. crypto perpetual futures triggered a 17% decline in Lighter token within 24 hours.

The flagship cryptocurrency traded at $83,164 in European morning hours, down 0.57% since midnight UTC. Bitcoin has held a narrow range since September 21, when it failed to break above $87,300. The previous session’s peak stood at $84,400 during U.S. trading hours.

Robinhood’s move into derivatives marked a significant shift in the retail-focused platform’s crypto offerings. The exchange announced it will operate U.S. crypto perpetual futures through its own derivatives arm, a development that immediately pressured Lighter, a perpetual futures exchange token with a $2.1 billion market capitalization. Lighter shed 5.6% since midnight UTC and fell 17% over the full 24-hour period.

The DeFi sector reversed sharply. The DeFi index declined 2.3% in 24 hours, with Aave retreating 4.4%. Other altcoins showed mixed performance: Quant advanced 14% in 24 hours, LayerZero gained 13%, and Bonk rose 5.9%. HBAR declined 16% over the same span.

Futures and Liquidations

Bitcoin futures open interest fell to 625,000 BTC from 644,000 BTC the prior day and 650,000 BTC two days earlier, continuing a downward trend. Liquidations halved to $196 million from $389 million the previous day, signaling reduced leverage across markets.

Binance retail traders maintained bullish positioning with a long/short ratio of 1.42, up from 1.24 the prior day. Whale positions showed similar bias at 1.49 compared to 1.31 previously, though whale leverage has moderated from 2.3 earlier in the month to 1.90 currently.

Ethereum futures open interest declined to 13.08 million ETH, marking its lowest level since early March 2026. Bitcoin’s advance from $57,000 in June to above $80,000 was driven by spot purchases rather than leveraged positions, as evidenced by the declining futures open interest throughout the rally.

Macro Backdrop

Implied volatility indices for Bitcoin and Ether remained subdued despite the rising Treasury yields and dollar strength. CoinMarketCap’s altcoin season index held at 61/100, maintaining its position above the 60/100 threshold for the fifth consecutive day.

Traders awaited PCE inflation data ahead of the U.S. market open, with the economic calendar event potentially influencing both equities and digital assets.
