Bitcoin.com announced Wednesday that its self-custodial web and mobile wallet will support USDU, a US dollar stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE. The integration allows users to hold, send, and receive USDU directly within the platform.
USDU is the first and currently only Foreign Payment Token registered under the UAE central bank’s Payment Token Services Regulation. The stablecoin is issued by Abu Dhabi-based Universal Digital and operates on the Ethereum blockchain.
The integration follows a series of infrastructure milestones. Zodia Custody, an institutional custody provider, added support for USDU in July. In August, a USDT-USDU liquidity pool launched on Uniswap, establishing on-chain trading pairs for the asset.
Regulatory Framework and Use Cases
Under UAE Payment Token Services Regulation, payments for digital assets and digital asset derivatives may only be made in fiat currency or a registered Foreign Payment Token. This regulatory requirement creates a direct use case for USDU within the UAE’s digital asset ecosystem.
Bitcoin.com plans to accept USDU for designated services and work toward enabling payments between users and merchants, though availability will vary by jurisdiction. The platform expects to add swap and buy-and-sell functionality later through third-party providers.
The integration positions USDU as a compliant payment rail within a retail-facing wallet. Bitcoin.com did not specify which services will initially accept the stablecoin or which jurisdictions will have restricted access.
