Bitcoin climbed to an intraday high of $81,400 on Friday, testing resistance near $82,000 to $82,200 as institutional flow dynamics shift between weekend and weekday market conditions. The weekend price action occurs without US spot ETF trading, which closes when American markets shut down.

Over the past week, Bitcoin ETF flows have swung sharply. Outflows of $746.3 million over September 15-16 reversed into $159.5 million of inflows on September 17, followed by $433 million of inflows on September 18, according to Farside data. The Federal Reserve’s first rate hike in three years on September 16 raised its target range 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00%, with policymakers projecting a median rate of 4.1% by year-end.

The $82,000 to $82,200 zone sits 1.1% to 1.4% above Friday’s intraday high. Bitcoin reclaimed the $80,000 round number this week after defending the $74,000 to $75,000 major support zone during earlier selloff pressure. If resistance breaks cleanly, the first upside zone extends to $84,000 to $85,000, with $86,000 marking the next meaningful target. On the downside, $78,000 represents a deeper retracement toward prior trading range, while $70,000 sits as a broader structural level.

Weekend trading conditions have thinned substantially since institutional ETF products launched. Kaiko research found Bitcoin’s weekend trading share fell to 16% of total volume in 2024, down from 28% in 2019. Thinner conditions can exaggerate price moves in either direction, meaning a genuine breakout above $82,200 requires more than a single green candle. Spot volume should broaden across major venues and open interest should climb gradually alongside price.

Treasury yields held near 5% and oil remained above $100 as the week closed, keeping the inflation backdrop unresolved. The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act before the weekend.

The critical test arrives when US spot ETF trading resumes Monday morning. Bitcoin’s ability to hold above resistance after institutional flows resume will determine whether the $82,000 zone breaks or holds as a cap on recovery attempts, a pattern that has defined the late August and September price structure.
