Researchers at the Bank for International Settlements analyzed 100 billion blockchain records and found that widely used cryptocurrency metrics can obscure economic activity, with measurement inconsistencies spanning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins.
The sixfold variation in Bitcoin onchain transfer value estimates reflects fundamental differences in how analysts treat change outputs. When users spend Bitcoin, unspent funds are often returned as change, which can be counted as another output despite not representing funds transferred to another party. Depending on methodology, this treatment creates vastly different pictures of actual transfer volume.
The BIS researchers stated that “metrics such as transaction volumes, market capitalisation and total value locked often suggest a degree of accuracy that is not supported by the nature of the underlying data.” They characterized onchain indicators as “noisy approximations rather than direct measures of economic activity.”
Ethereum Smart Contract Complexity
Ethereum’s measurement challenge stems from smart contract proliferation. The BIS analysis examined 67.5 million active Ethereum smart contracts, but 54 million of them could not be categorized. This ambiguity makes it difficult to distinguish between genuine economic activity and internal contract operations or testing activity.
Stablecoin Divergence Across Blockchains
Stablecoins present a distinct measurement problem. The same asset serves different purposes across blockchains. USDT on Ethereum is more linked to DeFi activity, with 20% of holdings in smart contracts as of 2022. On Tron, USDT is primarily associated with payment and store-of-value purposes, with only 1% held by smart contracts.
This divergence matters for interpretation. Raw transaction volume figures mask the underlying economic purpose. Over the past 30 days, stablecoins recorded $6.4 trillion in total transaction volume according to Visa’s Onchain Analytics dashboard, powered by Allium Labs data. The same period showed $313.1 billion in adjusted transaction volume, a figure designed to better represent economic activity by filtering high-frequency trading, bots, bridge routing, and internal exchange operations.
Visa’s dashboard displays both metrics to distinguish raw blockchain activity from adjusted measures, acknowledging that a single figure cannot capture the full picture of stablecoin economic relevance.
Market Capitalization Distortions
Measurement inconsistencies extend beyond transaction volume. Conventional market capitalization has at times been four times higher than realized capitalization, a gap that reflects differences in how researchers value circulating supply and price discovery mechanisms.
The BIS findings underscore a core challenge in cryptocurrency data infrastructure: the same underlying blockchain records can be interpreted through multiple valid lenses, each producing substantially different conclusions about economic activity.
