Layer-2 network integrates USDG stablecoin to capture earnings from digital dollar growth

Arbitrum has joined the Global Dollar Network, a Paxos-led stablecoin consortium, and integrated USDG across its DeFi ecosystem on October 5. The move grants Arbitrum a stake in reserve income generated by the stablecoin, a departure from its current position where the layer-2 network receives no share of earnings from stablecoins already circulating on its platform.

USDG, issued by Paxos and backed one-for-one by dollar reserves, currently circulates $3 billion across networks. The Global Dollar Network distributes rewards generated by USDG reserves among the 150 partners that drive adoption, rather than concentrating economics solely with the issuer. Arbitrum’s participation signals a shift toward shared upside in digital dollar infrastructure.

“With USDG, Arbitrum and builders across the platform now have a stake in the growth upside,” said Brendan Ma, head of investment strategy at Arbitrum Foundation.

Stablecoins already represent a significant portion of Arbitrum’s ecosystem. Circle’s USDC accounts for 60 percent of the $3.8 billion in stablecoins currently on Arbitrum. The addition of USDG introduces a competing asset whose growth benefits Arbitrum directly through reserve income sharing.

An ArbitrumDAO governance proposal asks the network to make USDG growth a strategic priority. The proposal recommends adding 100 million ARB to the network’s DRIP incentive program and deploying treasury assets to support USDG liquidity. Initial integrations with DeFi protocols Morpho, GMX, Fluid, and Maple are already live. Uniswap and Fhenix integrations are set to follow.

The Global Dollar Network’s reserve-sharing model contrasts with traditional stablecoin economics, where issuers retain all income from reserves. By distributing earnings to network participants, Paxos aims to align incentives across the ecosystem and accelerate adoption of USDG as a digital dollar standard.

Arbitrum’s entry into the consortium positions it alongside other major blockchain and fintech participants in the broader digital dollar landscape. OpenUSD, a competing stablecoin initiative, is backed by Mastercard, Visa, Stripe, Coinbase, and Shopify. Separately, the European initiative Qivalis is backed by 37 European banks. Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum-based network underpinned by Arbitrum technology, has also agreed to share a portion of revenue with the Arbitrum ecosystem.

The integration reflects a strategic move by Arbitrum to monetize its role as infrastructure for stablecoin settlement while offering builders on the platform exposure to USDG’s growth economics.
