Ethereum resilience after $6.3B breach

Tom Lee, founder of BitMine Immersion, characterized the market’s response to the $6.3 billion Binance hack as “constructive,” pointing to four structural safeguards that prevented systemic contagion. BitMine Immersion purchased 8,573 ETH (valued at $19.6 million) last week, expanding its treasury to 6,060,506 ETH, worth approximately $13.7 billion and representing 4.9% of circulating Ethereum supply.

Lee identified Binance’s decision to cover losses from its own balance sheet, rapid stablecoin freezes by Tether and Circle, the absence of DeFi protocol failures, and swift North Korea attribution as evidence the industry absorbed the breach without cascading damage. Ethereum declined 4% following the hack, a modest move compared to prior incidents. In February 2025, the Bybit hack triggered an 8% single-day drop and a 20% decline over the following week.

Lee’s accumulation underscores institutional confidence in Ethereum’s infrastructure. BitMine sits 49,500 ETH short of its stated 5% supply cap. The company’s treasury now represents a significant position in an asset trading at $2,280 per token at the time of the purchase.

Market context: ETH under pressure

The Binance incident occurred against a backdrop of broader Ethereum weakness. U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $1.61 billion in net outflows during October 2025, the worst month in the product’s history. Ethereum has declined 19% from its local peak, while Bitcoin has fallen 11%.

Bitcoin ETFs faced steeper outflows Monday, with $399 million in net redemptions. Over the past two trading sessions, Bitcoin ETF outflows exceeded $1 billion. Ethereum ETFs recorded $140 million in outflows during the same period.

Corporate treasury activity

Beyond BitMine, other corporate buyers remained active. Strategy purchased 811 BTC for $65.5 million, averaging $80,846 per bitcoin. Strive acquired 124 BTC for $10 million, averaging $80,526 per bitcoin. Strive’s total treasury stands at 43,124 BTC, valued at $3.3 billion, with $490.4 million in remaining cash.

Bitcoin traded at $77.3k at the time of these purchases.

Binance flows and stablecoin holdings

Binance saw $2 billion in net inflows over the past day, though the exchange recorded $12 billion in net outflows over the past week. Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, holds 150,000 Bitcoin worth $11.6 billion and serves 730 million customers worldwide. Tether and Circle froze stolen stablecoins within hours of the Binance breach, preventing their circulation.

North Korea attribution and denial

Investigators attributed the Binance attack to North Korea almost immediately. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un and a North Korean state media voice, rejected the attribution as “absurd rhetoric” and characterized the allegations as a “grave political provocation.”

Protocol revenue snapshot

Onchain activity generated modest revenue across major protocols. Hyperliquid recorded $2.39 million in protocol revenue, Pump.fun $1.64 million, and Collector Crypt $285,000.
