MetaMask adds Stellar to Mobile and Extension

MetaMask added Stellar support to its Mobile and Extension wallets on Oct. 29. The update places Stellar addresses inside existing multichain accounts, so users who already have one can see a Stellar address without creating a new wallet.

The Stellar address is derived from the recovery phrase that already controls a user’s multichain account. Users do not need to import a separate seed phrase.

Manual trustline activation required

Stellar tokens other than XLM require a trustline before a wallet can hold them. In MetaMask, adding a token to the visible list does not complete activation. Users must enable the token, open its Inactive entry, choose Activate, and confirm the transaction.

Under Stellar’s reserve rules, an unsponsored account must hold 1 XLM as a base reserve. Each ordinary trustline adds 0.5 XLM to that requirement, and the amount is locked in the account. A new, unfunded Stellar address needs a minimum initial deposit of 1 XLM in MetaMask’s documented flow.

Stellar allows another account to sponsor reserves, including the base account reserve.

Swaps and bridges

A swap between tokens already on Stellar can automatically create a trustline in MetaMask. MetaMask prompts users before bridge confirmation.

An ordinary Stellar token send to a recipient without the required trustline fails. Bridged funds can be lost if the trustline is missing on arrival, so users should activate the trustline before bridging into a non-XLM token such as USDC.
