SpaceX’s 1.3 billion-share unlock on Oct. 22, worth roughly $194.3 billion at the prior close, exposes a critical mismatch between Aave’s tokenized stock ambitions and the thin onchain liquidity available to support them.

Aave Labs proposed accepting tokenized SpaceX shares (SPCXc) as collateral on its V4 Equities Hub on Base with a 55% collateral factor, positioning the protocol to lend against real-world equity exposure. But the scale of the unlock and the microscopic trading depth available for SPCXc reveal why the bet remains fragile.

The Oct. 22 tranche represents 28% of SpaceX’s total lockup pool of 4.691 billion shares and expands the tradable float by 45%. LlamaRisk, Aave’s risk adviser, counted only 13,214 SPCXc tokens outstanding on Oct. 13, worth $2 million at that time. The Aerodrome DEX pool for SPCXc/USDC held just $1.04 million in liquidity, with only $370,000 of depth available to absorb a 2% price move.

LlamaRisk initially modeled the earnings-linked release for Nov. 5 to Nov. 9, but SpaceX’s Oct. 20 earnings report, which showed $14.6 billion in revenue and $4.4 billion in net income, pulled the unlock forward by about two weeks. The stock closed at $147.89 on Oct. 20, down 14% from Oct. 6’s $171.92.

Aave’s proposed 37,000-token cap for SPCXc collateral would be worth $5.47 million at the Oct. 20 close, enabling roughly $3 million in borrowing capacity if the cap fills completely. That capacity represents 0.0028% of the unlock’s total value. By comparison, Aave assigns a 65% collateral factor to Tesla and Meta tokenized shares, but SpaceX’s 81.4% realized annualized volatility since IPO, combined with 51.8% volatility over the most recent 30 trading sessions, justified the lower 55% factor.

LlamaRisk modeled a severe off-hours decline of 41% and calculated that SpaceX’s stock would need to fall 27.3% from the Oct. 20 close to breach the 55% collateral threshold at a 40% loan-to-value ratio. The protocol also proposed a 1,000 basis point collateral risk premium and a maximum 6.5% liquidation bonus to account for execution risk in thin markets.

A secondary unlock of 328.4 million shares is scheduled for Oct. 26, worth $48.6 billion. Elon Musk’s personal lockup expires in June 2027. Citi Research published a note titled “US Digital Assets: Aave – Bringing Real World Finance Onchain” on Oct. 19, framing the protocol’s move into tokenized equities as a step toward bridging traditional and onchain finance.

Historical precedent offers mixed signals. SpaceX stock rose 6.1% on Aug. 6 during an earlier unlock but fell 4% around Aug. 20 and Sept. 9 events. The Oct. 22 unlock will test whether Aave’s risk parameters can hold as $194.3 billion in new supply enters a market where onchain depth remains measured in millions.
