Bitcoin consolidated near $82,500 on Friday as crypto markets digested reports of funds stolen from Ledger hardware wallet users through a Southeast Asia-based reseller exploit.

The largest cryptocurrency dropped to a local low of $80,350 on Thursday before rebounding to $83,000 at the Wall Street open. BTC traded around the $82,500 level on Friday, a support threshold established in mid-September that analysts view as critical for near-term price action.

Ledger acknowledged theft claims linked to CryptoBillis, a reseller operating in Southeast Asia. The hardware wallet manufacturer issued a security advisory: “If you have set up your Ledger device, consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with new seed).”

Rolling 24-hour crypto liquidations passed $1 billion as markets absorbed the breach alongside broader equity market volatility. US technology stocks rebounded Friday morning following weaker-than-expected earnings projections from OpenAI, which had pressured the Nasdaq.

Range-Bound Consolidation Expected

Bitfinex Alpha, the research arm of Bitfinex crypto exchange, forecasted continued consolidation. “Our primary outlook anticipates range-bound consolidation between $81,300 and $86,500 heading into the 14 October US CPI data, with repeated retests of $84,000,” Bitfinex Alpha stated. Liquidity is thickening around the $84,000 level on exchange order books.

Adam Crisafulli, analyst at Vital Knowledge, attributed Thursday’s broader sell-off to positioning imbalances. “The sell-off reflected extreme positioning imbalances that have further to unwind in our view, which is why the whole AI-linked tech stock complex is unlikely to simply stage a sharp, V-shaped rebound,” Crisafulli said.

Hardware Wallet Security Under Pressure

The Ledger incident adds to mounting security concerns in the hardware wallet sector. Coldcard, a competing hardware wallet manufacturer, suffered a multi-phase hack in July and August, intensifying scrutiny on devices marketed as the gold standard for self-custody.

The $82,500 support level forms part of a potential inverse head-and-shoulders reversal pattern similar to one observed in 2023. Traders will monitor whether Bitcoin can sustain above this level ahead of US inflation data scheduled for October 14, which analysts expect will influence both equity and crypto markets.
