Autonomous agents settle infrastructure costs in stablecoins within owner-set budgets
Sui and Alibaba Cloud are integrating a payments system that allows AI agents to autonomously purchase cloud services and settle costs in stablecoins, according to an announcement at Sui Basecamp in Singapore. The collaboration replaces traditional monthly invoicing with per-request programmable payments, enabling agents to make individual cloud or inference calls without requiring human approval for each transaction.
The integration centers on Sui Agent Payments, a framework where AI agent owners set on-chain budgets and spending limits before deployment. Once configured, agents can execute transactions autonomously while remaining bound by those preset constraints. Budget limits, permissions, and transaction rules function as security controls to prevent agents from overspending.
Stablecoins are the settlement layer for this model. Unlike volatile cryptocurrencies, stablecoins settle programmatically, operate around the clock, and can be divided into small amounts, making them suitable for machine-to-machine payments at scale. Sui provides the blockchain execution and payment logic; Alibaba Cloud supplies the cloud services infrastructure.
The per-request payment structure differs fundamentally from how enterprises typically procure cloud resources. Traditional arrangements charge monthly fees for reserved capacity or usage tiers. The Sui-Alibaba model instead bills for discrete transactions, allowing agents to optimize spending by paying only for resources consumed in real time.
This arrangement addresses a technical constraint in autonomous agent deployment: agents operating without human oversight need a mechanism to access external services while respecting financial guardrails. By anchoring payments to on-chain budgets and stablecoin settlement, the integration enables agents to interact with cloud infrastructure without requiring human intermediaries to approve or process each request.
