Cardano Price Breakout Could Trigger Liquidations or Shorts Squeeze

Cardano’s ADA token has risen 42% since Sept. 16, climbing from roughly $0.19 to $0.27, while derivatives open interest has grown faster than on-chain stablecoin liquidity. The widening gap between leveraged positioning and available liquidity creates acute liquidation risk if the price fails to hold $0.28, according to analysis from Santiment and DefiLlama.

From Oct. 3 to Oct. 5, ADA gained 10% while open interest jumped 25% to $304 million. On Oct. 5 alone, 413 transactions of $100,000 or more were recorded on-chain, the highest count since June 4. Whale transaction volume reached 2.2 times the recent weekday baseline, signaling concentrated positioning in the move.

On Oct. 6, ADA registered an intraday high above $0.28 but was rejected at that level. The $0.277 to $0.28 zone now functions as the critical breakout confirmation level. If ADA clears and holds that range while open interest remains elevated, remaining shorts face forced liquidation. Conversely, if ADA stalls or reverses near $0.28 while funding rates stay positive and open interest stays high, leveraged long positions sit exposed to a liquidation cascade.

Stablecoin Supply Lags Turnover Surge

Cardano’s seven-day DEX volume reached $42.6 million, up 147% from the prior week. DeFi total value locked stands at $71 million. Despite the surge in turnover, stablecoin supply on Cardano declined 0.74% over seven days to $66.8 million, creating a structural mismatch. Seven-day DEX volume now represents 64% of the stablecoin base, and open interest stands at 4.6 times the stablecoin supply, according to DefiLlama data.

Social volume for ADA reached 1.1 times baseline, while social dominance hit 1.16%, the highest level recorded in 2026. Funding rates moved from the most negative reading in a month into positive territory as the price climbed, indicating that long positions now pay shorts to maintain exposure.

Near-Term Product Catalysts

Cardano’s RealFi ecosystem went live on Oct. 1 with the launch of USDrf and sUSDrf, credit-backed dollar-token products. Leios prototype work and support for Cardano native tokens via Fireblocks digital asset infrastructure are expected by March 2027, according to the development roadmap.

The combination of elevated leverage, compressed stablecoin buffers, and proximity to a key technical resistance level has created conditions where a single directional move could trigger cascading liquidations across leveraged positions.
