Institutional Withdrawals Accelerate as ETH Holds Near $2,700
US spot Ether ETFs posted five consecutive days of outflows totaling $206 million starting September 29, according to data cited by CryptoSlate Senior Reporter Oluwapelumi Adejumo. The streak followed a $17.1 million inflow recorded on September 28.
On October 5, the final day of the reported outflow period, ETFs shed $50.76 million as ETH traded near $2,700. Despite the institutional withdrawal pressure, Ethereum maintained price stability without breaking broader support levels.
On-Chain Signals Point to Long-Term Holder Repositioning
Blockchain analytics firm Santiment and on-chain data provider CryptoQuant flagged elevated repositioning activity during the outflow window. On September 30, Ethereum’s Age Consumed metric surged to 580 million token-days, a measure that tracks previously dormant coins moving onchain weighted by dormancy duration. Large spikes in this metric typically signal long-term holders repositioning assets and preparing to sell.
The same day, exchange balances rose approximately 18,000 ETH. On October 1, balances fell roughly 21,000 ETH. The divergence between the Age Consumed spike and modest aggregate exchange balance changes leaves open the possibility that activity reflected custody transfers, staking movements, or wallet reorganizations rather than broad distribution, according to the analysis.
Derivatives Markets Show Aggressive Selling Pressure
CryptoQuant contributor Arab Chain highlighted divergent signals in derivatives positioning. On October 5, Ethereum’s Estimated Leverage Ratio stood at 0.66 across venues, with Binance at 0.68 and OKX at 0.64. A lower ratio indicates weaker appetite for heavily leveraged positions.
Cumulative Net Taker Volume (CVD), which captures the balance between aggressive market buying and selling, showed pronounced seller pressure. Binance ETH CVD reached negative $1.36 billion on October 5, a sharp reversal from positive $1.94 billion on August 21, representing a $3.30 billion swing.
Binance ETH open interest climbed from $2.3 billion on August 6 to $3.3 billion by October 5, a 43% increase. This divergence between rising open interest and negative CVD indicates substantial outstanding derivatives exposure alongside aggressive selling crossing the spread, per the analysis.
Cumulative Inflows Remain Elevated
Despite the five-day outflow streak, US spot Ether ETFs have accumulated $13.75 billion in cumulative net inflows since inception. The $206 million outflow period represents a modest pullback from the broader institutional adoption trend tracked since ETF approval.
