RealFi rolled out USDrf and sUSDrf stablecoins on Cardano on October 1, backed by real-world credit assets including loans, private-credit funds, Treasuries, and money-market instruments. The launch marks the first stablecoin system on Cardano explicitly pegged to off-chain lending and credit instruments rather than token-based yield.
Charles Hoskinson, Cardano’s founder, described RealFi as part of the network’s effort to “bank the unbanked,” with returns generated from lending outside crypto markets. Hoskinson invested several million dollars in RealFi in July, signaling backing for the project before launch.
Token Structure and Access
USDrf can be minted and redeemed only by verified institutional partners. Retail users must trade the token on decentralized exchanges. Institutional redemptions are subject to daily or monthly limits and can be suspended under reserve stress, liquidity stress, sanctions concerns, security incidents, or market disruption.
sUSDrf is a junior staking instrument. Stakers face a seven-day cooldown before claiming USDrf, and conversion is not guaranteed one-for-one. The protocol absorbs credit losses first from first-loss reserves, then from sUSDrf holders, before losses reach senior USDrf holders.
HT Digital serves as the reserve attestation provider for the system.
Geographic Restrictions
RealFi currently excludes users from the United States, European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and other restricted jurisdictions.
Cardano DeFi Backdrop
Cardano’s decentralized finance ecosystem has contracted sharply. DeFi total value locked stood at $67 million at the time of the launch, down roughly 50 percent from $150 million in May. Stablecoin liquidity on Cardano, however, approached an all-time high of $70 million.
Roadmap Integration
Hoskinson outlined a broader roadmap connecting RealFi with Bitcoin DeFi and Midnight, a privacy platform. The plan would allow users to borrow against Bitcoin-linked assets and use privacy-preserving credentials within the ecosystem.
