Bitcoin traded near $86,379 on Wednesday morning with daily volume down 36% to $38 billion, a sharp contraction following Monday’s breakout. The pullback coincided with a marked narrowing in market breadth: 38 of the CoinDesk 100 constituents declined on the day, signaling that gains were concentrating rather than broadening across the crypto market.
Bitcoin posted a 0.24% gain since midnight UTC and a 1.3% advance over 24 hours. The CoinDesk 100 index itself rose 0.67% to 1,926.99, but the divergence between the index and its constituent performance underscored the rally’s fragility. Over a rolling 24-hour period, 87 constituents were higher and 13 lower, reflecting some recovery from the intraday weakness.
Crypto futures volume fell 21% to $227 billion in 24 hours, though open interest ticked up 1% to $159.4 billion. On Binance, the USDT margin borrow rate stood at 5.49%, down slightly from the previous week’s high of 5.52%, suggesting moderate deleveraging. Bitcoin open interest held at 710,000 BTC.
Whale Positioning and Volatility Signals
Whale positioning data painted a cautious picture. Binance’s long-to-short account ratio for whales stood at 0.98, while the platform’s broader position ratio was 1.97, down from a previous level of 2.3. OKX and Bybit whale ratios both remained neutral at 1.0.
XRP futures open interest reached 2.50 billion tokens, the highest level since Aug. 20, even as the token gained 3.3% to $1.62. Coinglass characterized the Binance whale bias on XRP as “extremely bearish,” a stark contrast to the token’s price action.
Deribit’s implied volatility (DVOL) stood at 38%, placing it in the 23rd percentile of its annual range. According to Deribit, “it signals that implied volatility remains cheap relative to historical spot momentum.” Call open interest remained concentrated at $90,000, $95,000, and $100,000 strike levels, while downside support was pegged at $75,000.
Broader Market Moves
Bitcoin Cash surged 2.0% to $351.59, with a notable 32% 24-hour gain attributed partly to a 30% rally on CME futures following a listing announcement. Bitcoin Cash open interest increased 7%, with an 8% annualized funding rate. NEAR posted a 43% annualized funding rate, while BTW reached 100%.
Among smaller tokens, Bonk gained 14% since midnight and 17% over 24 hours. Pudgy Penguins rose 8.3% since midnight and 20% over the day. The Memecoin Index declined 0.31% daily. LayerZero and The Graph both posted 22% and 14% 24-hour gains respectively.
In traditional markets, Brent crude fell to $99.13, dropping below $100 for the first time since Sept. 9. The crude contract had traded as high as $108 in mid-September. Gold declined 0.85% to $4,321, while silver fell 2.2% to $65.53. The dollar index rose 0.21% to 100.76.
The CoinDesk 100 posted a 2.7% 24-hour gain. The DeFi Select Index rose 0.83% daily and 9.6% over 24 hours, with Aerodrome Finance leading at 6.1%. Worldcoin declined 3.0%, Polkadot fell 2.9%, and Jito dropped 2.8% daily, though it was down only 0.16% over 24 hours.
