Ripple expanded its college athletics sponsorship strategy on Monday, announcing a partnership with Louisville Athletics that includes court branding at Denny Crum Court, the university’s basketball venue. The deal marks the third major university sports agreement for XRP branding, following jersey-patch sponsorships at Kansas and field signage at Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The Louisville partnership joins a broader shift in Ripple’s university strategy. Since 2018, the company has operated the University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), which funds blockchain research and education across more than 60 universities in 27 countries. That program has supported roughly 1,500 academic blockchain research projects and more than 800 new or expanded fintech courses.

But the recent deals signal a move toward consumer-facing visibility. The Kansas sponsorship, announced in July 2024, was described as the first integration of a cryptocurrency onto the jerseys of a major college athletics program. Sports Business Journal reported the Kansas agreement runs for five years and ranks among the more lucrative jersey-patch deals in college sports.

Kansas joined UBRI in 2019 after Ripple provided a $2 million commitment, paid over five years. The university’s work within the program included operating an XRP Ledger validator and developing blockchain projects spanning cybersecurity, biodiversity, and the arts.

Ripple’s Florida partnership, announced September 4, 2024, reportedly carries an annual value of $5 million, according to Sports Business Journal. The agreement includes support for financial and technology education for student-athletes and the broader university community. Florida’s deal does not require the university to hold XRP, accept the token for tickets or merchandise, or settle athletic-department payments over the XRP Ledger.

The timing of the sponsorship announcements coincided with XRP price volatility. In July 2024, when the Kansas deal was announced, XRP closed at $1.09. The token slipped below $1 in mid-August, then jumped almost 15 percent on both August 20 and August 21, reaching an intraday high of $1.695 on August 22. By the time of the Louisville announcement, XRP was trading almost 30 percent above its level when the Kansas sponsorship was announced, with a 52-week high of $3.14.
