Ethereum ETF faces timing constraint as staking locks up bulk of holdings

The 21Shares Ethereum ETF, trading under ticker TETH, processed $48.4 million in redemptions during the first half of 2026 while maintaining 86.42% of its ETH holdings in staked form as of June 30, according to a quarterly filing dated August 14.

The redemption volume exceeded new share contributions by $6.251 million over the period. Contributions for new shares totaled $42.174 million, leaving net outflows of $6.251 million. The trust sold 21,125.2745 ETH to settle redemptions, realizing a $12.769 million loss on those sales as Ethereum’s reference price declined 46.89% during the first half.

Net assets in the fund fell sharply. TETH held $31.298 million at the end of December 2025 but declined to $12.917 million by June 30, 2026. Share count dropped from 2.11 million to 1.64 million over the same span. Per-share net asset value fell from $14.83 to $7.88.

Staking concentration and redemption mechanics

The high concentration of staked holdings creates a structural constraint for future redemption settlement. Staked ETH cannot be moved or traded during a variable unbonding period. The trust warns in its filing that temporary lockups or transfer restrictions on staked positions could limit its ability to meet redemptions.

At quarter-end, the trust held 8,185.4684 ETH in total, with approximately 7,074 ETH staked and 1,112 ETH unstaked based on the disclosed 86.42% staking ratio. During the second quarter alone, the daily staking average was 31.64%, while the six-month average was 27.32%.

Only authorized participants can place redemption orders directly with the trust in baskets of 10,000 shares or multiples thereof. Ordinary investors trade individual TETH shares on secondary exchanges. The filing records completion of redemption activity without identifying any failed, delayed, or suspended orders during the period.

Broader ETF outflow backdrop

TETH’s redemption activity occurred within a volatile broader market for spot Ethereum ETFs. Over four straight withdrawal weeks in June, spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $870 million in outflows. A single inflow day of $19.3 million interrupted a 17-day outflow stretch during that period.
