BlackRock products capture 80% of combined flows

US spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recorded inflows exceeding $1 billion during the week ended August 7, marking their strongest week since April. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) captured approximately 80% of the combined inflows, according to SoSoValue data.

Bitcoin ETFs posted $853.54 million in inflows for the week, with positive flows across all five trading sessions. Monday saw $170.09 million, followed by $211.49 million on Tuesday and $244.42 million on Wednesday. IBIT alone brought in $693 million of the weekly total.

Ethereum ETFs recorded their strongest week since April with $244.94 million in inflows. The week extended a five-week consecutive inflow streak that has brought $566 million into Ethereum products. Despite starting Monday with $11.42 million in net outflows, Ethereum ETFs reversed sharply, recording $53.75 million on Tuesday, $60.86 million on Wednesday, $92.15 million on Thursday, and $49.60 million on Friday. ETHA contributed $203 million to the weekly total.

The inflow surge arrived days after disclosure of a security breach affecting Coldcard hardware wallets. TRM Labs researchers estimated that attackers drained approximately 1,816 BTC from more than 5,200 addresses beginning July 30. Estimates of the breach’s total value ranged from approximately $116 million to $130 million as researchers continued tracing thefts.

Eric Balchunas, Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst, noted the timing correlation between the Coldcard losses and the ETF inflow surge but stopped short of claiming affected self-custody investors moved directly into ETFs. Balchunas argued the breach could strengthen the case for institutional custody among investors seeking long-term Bitcoin exposure.

“The security infrastructure behind large financial institutions could become increasingly difficult to dismiss after a failure involving hardware designed specifically to keep Bitcoin outside the traditional financial system,” Balchunas said.

Bitcoin ETFs have recorded more than $52 billion in cumulative net inflows since their January 2024 US debut and now oversee approximately $80 billion in net assets. The week ended August 7 marked the strongest inflow week since the week ended April 17, when Bitcoin ETFs drew approximately $996 million.

Ethereum ETFs’ current five-week inflow streak is their longest since a 14-week run between May and August 2025 that attracted nearly $10 billion.
