Early month strength masks seasonal bear-market risk
Bitcoin has gained 9.5% in July 2026, approaching the 10% mark in the first two weeks of the month. The advance marks a four-year record for July performance. Yet traders and analysts are warning that the gains could reverse sharply in August, citing historical bear-market seasonality patterns from 2022.
“$BTC has been pretty much in line with its average July performance so far. But of course it is still early,” said Daan Crypto Trades, a trader monitoring the move. “This has to do a lot with slow markets, low liquidity and volumes during the Summer time.”
Bitcoin reached $64.3K on July 10 after Friday’s options expiry, which involved $1.4 billion in notional value. Some traders have identified a $70,000 target price for a continued bounce, with short entry points identified in the $67,000 to $73,000 range.
2022 bear market sets the template
The concern stems from Bitcoin’s performance during the last bear-market year. In July 2022, the asset ended the month nearly 17% higher following a devastating 38% loss in June. That relief rally proved temporary. August 2022 saw a 14% fall, followed by a 3% drop in September.
Rekt Capital, a trader and analyst, said the current price action mirrors that pattern. “If history repeats, things are likely going to pick up for Bitcoin and its Summer relief rally in the second half of July,” Rekt Capital stated. The analyst predicts that August will cancel out July’s gains as part of a broader bear-market cycle.
According to Rekt Capital, BTC price performance in 2026 is tracking previous bear markets closely. Multiple onchain indicators are flashing bear-market bottom signals for the first time in four years, though overall demand shows only partial signs of recovery.
Q3 weakness and summer seasonality
Q3 is historically Bitcoin’s weakest quarter, with average gains of just 6% even in bull markets. The seasonal weakness intensifies during summer months due to reduced market participation. An unnamed trader summarized the expected pattern as “bullish July, then bearish August until Q4.”
Peter Anthony, creator of the House of Crypto YouTube channel, offered a cautious view: “Interesting few days ahead.”
Daan Crypto Trades highlighted longer-term volatility concerns, asking: “Q4 is when the real volatility takes place for BTC (both directions). Will this year be the same?”
