Ethereum co-founder names three technical priorities for 2026-2029 upgrades

Vitalik Buterin published a “Lean Ethereum” strawmap roadmap on July 5, positioning quantum resistance, scalability, and privacy as the network’s top technical priorities over the next three to four years.

The roadmap marks a significant shift in Ethereum’s development focus. “Quantum safety has shifted up a LOT in priority,” Buterin said, adding that quantum-safe solutions for blobs have “become urgent.” He also designated privacy enhancement as a “first class goal” for the protocol.

The scope of the upgrades compares to the September 2022 Merge, which transitioned Ethereum from energy-intensive proof-of-work mining to proof-of-stake consensus. Buterin is advocating for development of a new virtual machine, such as leanISA or RISC-V, to support programmable privacy and scalability improvements.

The announcement arrives amid organizational turbulence at the Ethereum Foundation. The foundation laid off approximately 20% of staff last month and reduced its budget by 40%. Protocol contributors Tim Beiko and Barnabé Monnot departed in May. Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stańczak also left the foundation in recent months.

Timeline Debate and Missing Elements

The proposed 2026-2029 delivery window has drawn scrutiny from researchers and analysts. Dankrad Feist, a researcher at Tempo blockchain, argues the three to four year timeline is too slow. Feist contends that AI-assisted development could enable delivery within one year.

Ignas Fiodorovas, a crypto analyst, supports the roadmap’s priorities but expressed doubt about the Ethereum Foundation’s ability to meet the stated timeline, citing a history of missed deadlines. Fiodorovas also flagged a notable omission: improved tokenomics for Ether (ETH) does not appear on the roadmap, despite ETH declining in price amid broader market downturn.

Buterin did not specify whether leanISA or RISC-V is his preferred virtual machine architecture. The roadmap also did not disclose technical specifications for the quantum-safe blob solution or provide detailed breakdowns of work beyond the three named priorities.

The “Lean Ethereum” strawmap signals a recalibration of protocol development under resource constraints. Whether the foundation can execute the plan without further staffing disruptions remains an open question for the network’s governance community.
