Moonbeam, the Polkadot-based interoperability protocol, announced on Friday that it is migrating its core infrastructure to Ethereum layer 2 Base and launching Moonbeam Protocol, a dedicated AI agent communication and settlement network.
The move marks a strategic shift away from Polkadot, where Moonbeam launched as a parachain in January 2022. The protocol will establish a new network purpose-built for autonomous agents to discover counterparties, negotiate transactions, and execute payments entirely on-chain without intermediaries.
“This is a pivot to the most exciting frontier in crypto: autonomous AI agents that find each other, negotiate work, and pay each other entirely on-chain, without a middleman,” Moonbeam said in a statement. The protocol added that “AI-native on-chain coordination represents a significant long-term opportunity. This transition allows us to focus resources around that direction.”
The transition reflects broader momentum in agentic development across crypto. Coinbase’s x402 payments protocol has emerged as a major driver of AI agent adoption on-chain. Aptos and Near have similarly rolled out infrastructure to support agent-driven activity. However, adoption remains nascent. x402 facilitated only $2 million in trading volume over the past 30 days, indicating the market is still in early stages.
Moonbeam holders will have until July 31, 2026 to bridge their GLMR tokens from Polkadot to Base. The protocol stated that GLMR holders on centralized exchanges do not need to take action, as exchanges will handle the migration.
The pivot carries implications for Polkadot’s ecosystem. Crypto community members have characterized Moonbeam as Polkadot’s “flagship project,” and one unnamed X user called the move “a real pain in the ass for Polkadot.” However, Moonbeam stated it is not abandoning existing builders or infrastructure providers on Polkadot and will continue providing cross-chain interoperability services on its parachain during the transition.
The decision to prioritize AI agents aligns with executive sentiment across the industry. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that AI technology has not yet accelerated the company’s workflows as quickly as expected, suggesting that on-chain AI coordination remains an unproven but pursued avenue for scaling autonomous systems.
Moonbeam did not announce a specific launch date for Moonbeam Protocol or provide technical specifications for the AI agent framework.
