Nasdaq-listed Solana Company has signed a memorandum of understanding to advise and build blockchain and crypto infrastructure for Kazakhstan’s Alatau City, a planned digital-first megacity positioned as a key crypto hub in Central Asia.
The MOU was signed during Alatau City’s roadshow in Shenzhen and Hong Kong in June 2026. Joseph Chee, chair and CEO of Solana Company, said in a statement: “We look forward to deepening this partnership and expanding the Solana ecosystem’s footprint across the region.”
Alatau City Authority, led by CEO Alisher Abdykadyrov and deputy CEO Arman Tastanbekov, secured 30 cooperation agreements during the roadshow representing $6 billion in combined investment potential. The Solana Foundation also signed an MOU with Alatau City during the same event.
Positioning as Central Asia’s Crypto Hub
Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev first unveiled the Alatau City megaproject to an international audience in May 2024. The city is designed as a fully integrated smart city incorporating low-altitude aircraft, robotaxis, autonomous drones, and hydrogen energy infrastructure. Blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, and digital identity systems are planned from inception.
The Alatau Crypto Cluster represents a dedicated pilot zone and special economic area where cryptocurrency will be permitted for everyday transactions. This positions the city as a regulatory sandbox for digital asset adoption in the region.
Solana Company’s involvement builds on Kazakhstan’s broader embrace of blockchain infrastructure. The country launched Central Asia’s first Solana Economic Zone in Astana last year in partnership with the Solana Foundation. Last week, the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE) launched its first Solana ETF, signaling institutional appetite for Solana-based products in the region.
Partnership Scope
The Solana Company MOU covers advisory services and infrastructure development, though specific technical details remain undisclosed. The partnership aligns with Alatau City’s broader strategy of attracting 30+ crypto and blockchain partners during its China roadshow phase.
Development Stage and Regulatory Backdrop
Alatau City remains in early development and planning stages. Independent news reports indicate current residents lack gas, water, electricity, and internet connectivity, suggesting the futuristic vision is still years from realization.
The project also faces regulatory scrutiny. Kazakhstan’s National Bank and Financial Monitoring Agency expressed concerns in March 2026 about constitutional changes required to support a crypto-based economy, according to reporting by The Diplomat. These concerns highlight ongoing tensions between the government’s crypto ambitions and financial stability mandates.
Solana Company’s advisory role positions the Nasdaq-listed firm as a key infrastructure partner in one of Central Asia’s most ambitious blockchain initiatives, contingent on the city’s ability to resolve regulatory and infrastructure challenges.
