Retail allocation and AI narrative compete for speculative capital as Bitcoin trades 50% below all-time high
Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market face potential selling pressure this week as SpaceX prepares for a $75 billion initial public offering, with analysts warning the event could redirect liquidity that has supported the leading cryptocurrency above $60,000.
SpaceX has reserved 30% of IPO shares, equivalent to $22.5 billion, for retail investors. That allocation targets the same pool of speculative capital that has historically flowed into cryptocurrency markets, according to market participants.
Spencer Hallarn, global head of over-the-counter trading at GSR, a crypto trading firm and liquidity provider, said the IPO competes directly for funding. “Crypto is a funding currency for a lot of this,” Hallarn said. “Has got to come from somewhere.”
The timing compounds existing headwinds. Bitcoin is currently trading approximately 50% below its all-time high of $126,000, and crypto exchange-traded fund outflows surged to over $2 billion in May. David Morrison, senior market analyst at Trade Nation, attributed some of the weakness to shifting investor sentiment. “Bitcoin has lost its luster and novelty for many investors,” Morrison said.
Thomas Puech, CEO of INDIGO, a crypto trading firm, noted that alternative investment narratives have gained traction. He characterized the SpaceX IPO as a “sexier” trade compared with Bitcoin and crypto, reflecting a broader shift in speculative interest toward artificial intelligence and aerospace ventures.
However, Sui Chung, CEO of CF Benchmarks, which provides indexes for crypto exchange-traded funds, cautioned against assuming a direct capital transfer. Capital leaving crypto “cannot be assumed it will flow directly into SpaceX,” Chung said, though he indicated at least some capital is being redirected into the broader equity market.
The IPO arrives amid broader market uncertainty. Interest rate concerns are building around the wider market outlook, and additional high-profile IPOs are expected in the pipeline, potentially extending pressure on speculative asset classes including cryptocurrency.
The exact date of the SpaceX IPO was not specified in available reporting.
